Wyoming Fly Fishing Reports

We awakened Saturday morning to the smell of cowboy coffee and a scrumptuous breakfast casserole waiting over the campsite. We sat and enjoyed our breakfast by the campfire and some fresh cantalope as we watched the sun rise over Old Smoky Top Mtn.

We awoke early this morning and started packing our gear. The fire to the south grew overnight , and being in the Gros Ventre mountains the prevailing winds carried the smoke well north to the Buffalo Valley where we were riding out from. We rode the 5.5 mile Soda Fork trail out and loaded all our stuff from the horses into my van. We then headed back to Jackson and got the guys checked in and a nice shower and then a fantastic dinner of Buffalo ribs, elk medallions, garlic mashed potatoes and some great bread. I took the guys back to get some rest and another early start tomorrow as I will be taking everyone to the airport to catch a 7am or 8am flight to Denver, then to home. It’s been a fun trip and looking forward to next year.

I am already setting dates in anticipation of some early bookings due to some new pricing that will put this great trip at an unbearable price several hundred dollars less than years’ past.

Fly Fishing Questions

We know you have an interest in river and stream access issues from prior correspondence. What do you think are the biggest issues facing fly fishers and sportsmen these days?

Yesterday we kicked off our new People of Fly Fishing series with Part 1 of a 10 question interview with Sam Snyder; late yesterday we added a few clicks of Sam dinking around with a few little fish back home.

The legal right to access and use of public land is big deal. That was the fight in Montana with HB309, it is the fight in Utah and now in Virginia, and in Pennsylvania before that, people trying to assert private rights on public resources.

Being an academic, I have hardly stayed put. I have been a nomad for some time. I spent the school years of college fishing in Central Pennsylvania with summers in the Roaring Fork Valley of CO, a few years in Central NY, then some time in FL where I paddled around in the gulf on a kayak looking for reds and sea trout or chased bass and sun fish in the warm waters of Central FL, and many places in between. I have been fortunate to fish a lot of water thus far in my life, but I have hardly stayed put.

Scientific Angler Fly Fishing Kit

Dragon ClawsA dragon-claw cane is a more recent creation from fantasy novels and films. A dragon claw holding a crystal or silver ball is quite popular. According to stories, the hand of a dragon was a talisman for many wizards. The sphere held in the dragon’s claw represents the world, and he who owns this talisman will conquer the world. You can find several reproductions in this category. These canes are very popular among women interested in goth and/or vampire fashion than men and may not be as suitable as a gentleman’s fashion accessory.

This dragon lived in a well in Duck’s Pool Meadow in Brinsop. It was killed by a local knight, but some insist that this knight was St. George. Yes, he was a busy guy! Most illustrations found for this dragon show large wings which is typical for modern-day images. The dragon sculpture on the current reproduction cane is actually quite nice looking, although probably hard to carry around.

Although many original dragon walking canes from the 19th century or earlier were made of wood, bone, and ivory, the currently available dragon canes are usually made of pewter, and often made in Italy. Some no-name cheaper dragon canes are made in China and India. (Don’t discount Indian craftsmanship, however. They make really nice canes at a reasonable price.) None of these canes are for orthopedic use. They are meant only as a gentleman’s fashion accessory, and cheaper ones are for home decorations.

Montana Fly Fishing Trips

In over my waist on the upper Madison one afternoon, I wondered whether I would have to risk deeper, faster water if a bear wandered down the bank. A few days earlier a mother grizzly had killed a man in the park. Luck gave me a beautiful rainbow trout and no bears, but when we drove past the same section later, two grizzlies bumbled along the opposite bank.

This renowned winter playground is often overlooked in the summer months. But even though the snow is gone, there’s still plenty to do and see in Colorado. Majestic mountains and lush green valleys abound in this state, so hiking and mountain biking opportunities are plentiful. Or you can rent a raft or kayak and navigate the waters of one of the state’s many rivers, such as the Colorado River, Roaring Fork River or Arkansas River. Vail, Aspen and Telluride are all well-known gems of the state, but don’t overlook smaller towns such as Breckenridge, Durango or Crested Butte.

A very common misconception among coastal anglers is that trout and red fish go deep in the winter and the only way to catch them is to fish deep. They do, indeed, seek the warmth of deep channels during the coldest of times but believe me when I tell you they will be back on the flats as soon as the sun shines. January has been the best big trout month for me. The average high temperature for Rockport in January is 64 degrees. That means plenty of warm sunny days. In the past two years my clients have landed 14 trout between 25 and 31 in January. Most of these were taken by sight casting.

The gear in the photo is a floating line with a 9 ft fluro carbon leader tied onto a seatrout shrimp fly. The hook is a double so its a very agressive pattern. I have caught small Bass with this set up, but I hope to connect with a Bream one day soon (fingers crossed).

You would of course do well to choose lighter weight saltwater fly fishing reels whenever you plan on angling close to the shore. Otherwise, you will also need to choose from different models of spinning reels including those that weigh about fewer than seven ounces and those that weigh more than seven ounces. A good such saltwater fly fishing reel should also be made of the appropriatecorrect material (preferably magnesium or titanium or composites that are light in weight) and which also incorporates corrosion resistant parts, particularlyits ball bearings which will prevent damage to the reel when the reel is plunged in saltwater.
