Our first trip of the year to Lake Oahe began Tuesday around four AM, when I made the six hour trip North with Team Outdoorsmen Adventures member Bill Christensen, Hartington, NE. and his grandson Carson, Becker.

We didn’t have much time at Frances, less than two full days, but we managed to scare up a few walleyes, but interestingly, we also caught a lot of perch, and some very nice ones, while targeting walleyes.

A number of people are calling and asking if the river is fishable. Yes, the river is fishable, and the fishing is quite good. That should be qualified with this statement: ‘If you use a guide.’ The guides know how to keep the boat on the seams where the fish are holding; they know the correct amount of lead to use (a lot) and the right strike indicator; and they know what flies to use depending on what part of the river they are fishing. Using a guide can make a huge difference as to whether you view the quality of fishing as outstanding or lousy. The river is big and intimidating right now. Most of the fishing is boat fishing, although there are still some wade-fishing hotspots where the fish are congregated.

Bob, fishing with Craig caught all his fish on the McCloud on a dry fly rig including several in the upper teens. Lucky Lew always manages to be in the right place at the right time. While most of the fish in the morning were on the smaller size, the mayfly hatch in the afternoon saw all the big heads up and Bob took full advantage, getting his dry fly game going in a big way.
