Peel back the layers of superficial Western reporting of Africa and you find that the place has got a lot more going for it than just wildlife safaris:

Keeper bass enter the river in late May to chase the herring that are moving upriver to spawn and then dropping back to the ocean. These bigger bass, which can top 30 pounds, are best targeted at night or just before dawn. They will take soft-plastic baits (Hogies, Slug-Gos and Ron-Zs), swim shads, large herring-imitating flies and swimming plugs fished around pilings, deep holes and channel edges.

Northeastern Utah& 39;s Green River offers extraordinary trout fly fishing. The tailwaters below the Flaming Gorge Dam offer outstanding trout habitat. It was this 30-mile section of river that produced a 30 pound brown trout only 10 years ago. Unfortunately, this secret is out and summer finds the river quite busy. Early spring and fall offer less competition and a very large number of trout.

Fluke are another major target species in the Westport area. You can find plenty of keeper-size fish just outside the inlet, with the outgoing tide producing best. Set up a drift over uneven sandy bottom and send down a squid strip on a jig or a ThomCat rig, but be prepared to weed through lots of small fish before you land a keeper. The true 'doormat-hunters' often fish live baits around the edges of rocks, wrecks and ledges. You won't catch as many fluke this way, but the ones you'll score will tend to be big!

The Wind River Range in Wyoming has an estimated 700 trout lakes. These lakes include cutthroat, brook, rainbow, grayling, brown and golden trout. This range is primarily high country and offers great hiking as well as fishing.

Westport is popular among offshore fishermen, too, as it puts them relatively close to the 20- and 30-fathom lines south of the Vineyard, where bluefin tuna, white marlin, dolphin (mahi) and sharks begin to prowl starting in July. In fact, school bluefins, mahi and skipjack sometimes venture remarkably close to Westport, putting them within range of small-boat anglers.

As the river warms in June, the waters of Buzzards Bay begin to heat up. The aforementioned structure spots favored by tautog will hold stripers through June. For the best action, concentrate your efforts around dawn. Poppers, flies and big soft-plastics work very well in the early-morning hours. Once the fish hold deep, live-baiting with bunker and eels, or slow-trolling with leadcore or wire line, is the way to go. Tube-and-worm combos and parachute jigs are proven fish-catchers in this part of lower Buzzards Bay, but 9ER rigs and old-fashioned Danny plugs trolled on wire are effective as well. The main requirements are getting your lure close to the bottom and fishing areas of strong current.

If you're looking for some fun, fast daytime fishing that kids will love, try targeting black sea bass, scup, cunner and other assorted bottom fish over hard bottom in 20 to 50 feet of water. Check out a chart and you'll see plenty of 'high spots' in Buzzards Bay that will hold these species throughout the summer. All you need to score is a basic high-low rig weighted with a 4- to 6-ounce bank sinker and a 3/0 or 4/0 hook baited with clam or squid. Anchor up and lower your rig to the bottom. An even easier method, especially if you don't feel like dealing with bait, is to send down a 4-ounce diamond jig and hop it up and down a foot or so above the bottom.

A STOMPer visited Bedok Jetty last week and learnt from an angler that music attracts fish to the bait.Fisherman told STOMP today (Jul 9):"These pictures were taken at the Bedok Jetty near the East Coast Park."Everyday hordes of anglers make their way to this jetty to enjoy the thrill of fishing from a pier."They come on foot, bicycles or motorbikes."The squid that was caught and kept in a polystyrene box."Last week I visited Bedok Jetty and found that anglers come here everyday of the week."They came with their fishing gear, hooks, baits and even stools and canvas to keep out the sun."One angler told me he was there for two days and he had a good catch including eels, crabs, squids and some ikan chermin."He liked the jetty as it is close to the public toilets and food centre."He also brought along his radio and DVD player as he believes that music somehow attracts fish to his line and he was glad he had a good catch for two days."I see a trumpeter perch ( Pelates quadrilineatus), flower crab (Portunus pelagicus), and what is probably a blue-spined swimming crab (Thalamita prymna) in the first photo.That's not a squid in the fourth picture, but an octopus.Ikan chermin is a local name for Indian threadfin (Alectis indicus), a pelagic predator of coastal waters.Indian threadfin, Bedok Jetty;(Photo by lkc_stib)The eel is probably a brown-spotted moray eel (Gymnothorax reevesii).Oh, and I'm not too sure if fish are really attracted by music, although I won't be surprised if they might be drawn by the vibrations that are transmitted to the water. One old man won't decimate the fish there. Still, if we do not make an active effort to curb these illegal practices on our protected shores, what sort of message are we sending to the greedier and more unscrupulous people out there? Will we see even more people descending upon the shores of Labrador with driftnets and bubu traps? I'm sure the last thing it needs is more fishermen blatantly flouting the law and using their selective vision to ignore the No Fishing signs.

Some residents were seen fishing at the park connector beside Sungei Ulu Pandan last Sunday(22 March).A STOMPer describes the scenes he saw:"These pictures were taken at the park connector beside Sungei Ulu Pandan near Clementi Ave 4."On Sunday afternoon, some residents from the nearby HDB estate came here armed with fishing rods to try their luck in fishing."Some anglers managed to catch some tilapia after waiting for half an hour."Some children also swam in the river and they seemed to enjoy themselves."

The lateral line on spotted bass is broken, and spots on their lower sides form rows of spots. The closed mouth of a spotted bass does not extend beyond the back margin of the eye.

Deep sea fishing is as exciting a sport as any. The thrill of hitting an 1100 pound marlin is remarkable. But there are other types of fish in the sea as well. Some will feed in the surf, some will feed from the bottom and even others will feed in the shallows. So the selection of your sea fishing reel is an important one.

The problem was, some of my hand made rippers worked better than others, but fishing from the shore in a snaggy storage was tough. I found that the ones that worked would be the first to get used first, which meant they would also be the first ones that I'd lose! And that in turn meant that I would end up with a box of good lures but the great lures wouldn't last long and I would be in the workshop every evening trying to make replacements.
