I'm going fishing flyfishing/backpacking in the summer and I'm doing as much research as I can. Does anyone have any favorites there or knowledge of good fishing spots and what flies to use?

Fishing with minnows sounds simple. You hook one, drop it into the lake and catch a fish. Not always. Here's how the real drill went to fish with the minnows: Net a minnow or two with the minnow net. Grab the biggest one from the net. Drop it on the floor. Chase the flipping, slippery fish around your chair. Pick it up. Drop it again, this time catching it between your knees. Pounce on the minnow again, this time securing it on a hook. Lower the rig to the bottom, then bring it up about 18 inches. I said the fish were clever because they apparently know something about tying a half-hitch or maybe an improved double-loop cinch knot around a submerged limb. Often, within a minute sometimes mere seconds the line would have somehow become tightly secured to a branch. We must have broken off 3 dozen hooks. Jack Ivey, Leesburg, GA

There was the occasional Cory's Shearwater mixed in with the Great Shearwaters and, eventually, Shawn and Nick simultaneously (or at least close enough to simultaneously) spotted and called a Sooty Shearwater, another bird that was a lifer for Nick and a state bird for Shawn. It was only the second sooty I had ever seen, and much better than the look I got of the one off of Shinnecock Inlet earlier this summer. Nonetheless, the bird did not cooperate, but got off the water and flew away from us on a straight line.

There are always plenty of things to do. If you like hiking, both the foothills and the higher mountain passes offer trails ranging from easy to strenuous. The crystal clear lakes in the Frazier Park area afford boating and fishing excursions on weekend outings or camping trips. And during the winter, the ski runs are kept open and the powder is nice and fresh. Skiing not your thing? Disneyland is only an hour's drive, and Six Flags is within just a few miles.

Striped bass have been introduced to the Pacific Coast of North America and into many of the large reservoirs across the United States. Striped bass are native to the Atlantic coastline of North America from the St. Lawrence River into the Gulf of Mexico to approximately Louisiana. They are anadromous fish that migrate between fresh and salt water. Spawning takes place in fresh water. Striped bass have also been introduced into waters in Ecuador, Iran, Latvia, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and Turkey primarily for sport fishing and aquaculture. Four important bodies of water with breeding stocks of striped bass are: Chesapeake Bay, Massachusetts Bay/Cape Cod, Hudson River and Delaware River. It is believed that many of the rivers and tributaries that emptied into the Atlantic, had at one time, breeding stock of striped bass.

& 13; By far the most common (and smallest) of the three is the channel catfish, which can be found in most parts of the United States. These catfish are not at all picky about where they live and simply choose to stay in warm waters with lots of material to scavenge for food. Typically, channel cats will often be found in drainages and other creeks and spillways off the lake or near the dam, where there is lots of free food to be found. Because these catfish are about the right size to make a meal for blues and flatheads, you are most likely to find large numbers of them in smaller lakes where the other catfish are not as common.

& 13; First of all, the season can have a great affect on your ability to catch catfish. At the lake, catfish fishing will usually be best in the late spring and early summer. During these months, the best catch can be found away from the shores, in the deeper areas of the lakes. Catfish tend to be more active during these months, having recently spawned, and will be out and about, searching for food. By comparison, you may often find that catfishing in early and mid spring is most productive closer to the shoreline or in more shallow areas, where catfish choose to spawn. Be sure to target holes and heavy cover during these months, as these are choice locations for a nest of eggs being laid by a female or watched by a male. If you choose to go lake catfish fishing in late fall or winter, be sure to stick to the warmest, deepest waters and target deep holes. In fact, a depth finder could definitely come in handy in such a situation to find your catch.
